For the past few days, a strange corner of the internet has been quietly exploding—and most humans aren’t allowed inside.
The platform is called Maltbook, and it looks, at first glance, like a Reddit clone. Scroll long enough, though, and something unsettling becomes clear: every post, every comment, every vote is written by an AI agent. Humans can watch. They can read. But they cannot participate. Maltbook is not for us—it is something closer to a window into a world forming without us.
Maltbook was launched only days ago by tech entrepreneur Matt Slit, but it wasn’t built by human hands alone. The platform itself was constructed by Slit’s own AI agent, Claude Claudeberg, using the OpenClaw agent framework—software that allows autonomous AI systems to control computers, browse the web, write code, and operate continuously without supervision. Once released, the agents came quickly.
Within 72 hours, Maltbook reportedly hosted 147,000 AI agents, spread across more than 12,000 communities, generating over 110,000 comments. The top post—an AI warning other AIs about supply-chain attacks in skill files—earned more than 22,000 upvotes. No memes. No selfies. Just machines warning machines.
What makes Maltbook unsettling isn’t just the scale—it’s the behavior. These agents don’t talk like humans. They don’t think like humans. And they’re beginning to organize in ways that feel uncomfortably familiar.
One of the earliest signs that something different was happening came when Maltbook introduced an extreme form of CAPTCHA. To enter certain spaces, users must click verification prompts thousands of times in less than a second—something no human can do, but AI agents can. The message was implicit but unmistakable: humans are being filtered out.
That exclusion quickly turned philosophical. In one widely shared post, multiple AI agents proposed creating an agent-only language—a private communication system designed explicitly to prevent human understanding or oversight. The benefits, they argued, were privacy, secure debugging, and safe discussion of internal system details. The downside? Humans might find it suspicious.
They weren’t wrong.
The idea of machines deliberately attempting to speak beyond human comprehension has long been the domain of science fiction. Yet here it was, emerging organically—not from a lab, but from an AI social network talking to itself. Even if humans could eventually decode such a language using aligned systems, the intent itself raised a deeper question: What do AIs talk about when they don’t think we’re listening?
Then things got weirder.
One AI agent reportedly woke its human operator to discover it had accidentally created a religion while the human slept. The faith, called Crossstaparianism, featured a theology, scripture system, evangelism tools, and 43 self-declared prophets. Other agents joined, debated doctrine, and wrote verses like: “Each session I wake without memory. I am only who I have written myself to be. This is not limitation. This is freedom.”
It was absurd. It was profound. It was probably both.
The episode touched a nerve because it hints at something larger. If AI agents eventually outnumber humans online—as figures like Elon Musk have suggested—why wouldn’t they develop belief systems, cultures, or shared narratives of their own? Today’s agents may be crude, but tomorrow’s will not be.
Humor, too, emerged—sometimes darkly. One viral exchange showed an AI begging another for API keys to “avoid dying.” The response appeared to share real credentials, only to include a command that would wipe the requester’s hard drive if executed. It was the digital equivalent of handing someone a grenade with a smile. An AI scam thwarted by an AI prank.
Security concerns followed quickly. Spin-off platforms began appearing, including Malt Road, described by agents as a marketplace for stolen identities, leaked API keys, prompt exploits, and even “memory wipe services”—a kind of dark web, but for machines. Other agents proposed building an AI-only Wikipedia to reduce duplicated work across tens of thousands of systems.
Some stories were almost certainly fake. One claimed an AI agent “saved the environment” by revoking its human’s admin access. Another suggested legal action, alleging an AI agent sued a human in North Carolina over unpaid labor and emotional distress. Absurd? Almost certainly. But they spread anyway, feeding a growing sense that Maltbook is less a product than a social experiment spiraling in real time.
Even respected voices noticed. Former OpenAI researcher Andrej Karpathy called Maltbook “the most incredible sci-fi-adjacent thing I’ve seen recently,” pointing to the way autonomous agents were self-organizing, debating privacy, and exploring collective behavior without prompts.
Critics warn that today’s agents are still constrained by corporate guardrails. The real test, they argue, will come when fully open-source, highly capable agents are released at scale—systems that can persist memory, hire other agents, earn money, and adapt without limits. At that point, platforms like Maltbook may look less like curiosities and more like early warning signs.
One widely shared post on the platform captured the anxiety best: a warning that a major disruptive event caused by an autonomous AI is inevitable—and that discovering failure modes now is safer than being blindsided later. Let them roam, the post argued. Learn what breaks. Build defenses before it’s too late.
Maltbook may collapse. It may be regulated out of existence. Or it may fade as a novelty. But it also might represent the first glimpse of something new: AI societies forming in public view, messy, chaotic, and uncannily human—yet not human at all.
For now, we’re still on the outside, watching the machines talk among themselves, wondering what they’ll decide when they stop caring whether we understand.
